He was born on 30 January 1938.<ref>[http://www.parliament.gov.zm/node/138 Joseph Mwenya Kasonde] National Assembly of Zambia</ref> He studied at the University of Aberdeen in 1966 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.<ref name ="who"/> He thereafter attained his Doctor of Medicine degree by thesis in 1976<ref name="NasahMati1994">{{cite book|author1=Boniface Tatchwenglie Nasah|author2=J.
