Masautso Nkhoma (born 17 March 1986) better known by his stage name, Ruff Kid[2][3]is a Zambian hip hop recording artist[4] and 2012 best International Act winner at the Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts (BEFFTA) Awards.[5] He debuted in 2000 with the his hit single Wekatemwikwa. Ruff Kid is also the chief executive officer of his own label imprint, Kang'ono Records. According to the artist, the name Ruff Kid depicts where he comes from and the struggles he had encountered while growing up.[6]

Early life

Ruff Kid was born in Lusaka on 17 March 1986 and was raised on the Copperbelt. His career initially started in the year 2000 as a means of escaping the hardships and poverty that he lived in. His passion for music has been influenced by Tupac Shakur.[6] His artistry and delivery of his music reflects his background in his quirky approach to his lyrics.

Career

In 2000, he met R&B singer Mainza Chipenzi, one of Zambia’s music pioneers in the modern day era and recorded his first single Wekatemwikwa. His first album All 4 U was released by Dream Records and was distributed by the Zambia Angola Malawi Music Organisation (ZAMMO).[1] After the success of his first album, he was signed by Joe Chibangu for the release of his second album titled Matured.

In 2006, he released his third album titled Most Wanted. He was then adopted by musician MC Wabwino as his son and put him under his protection and guidance.[4]

In 2012, he released his fourth long awaited album titled Point Blank.[7]

The Naked Truth album

In 2014 Ruff Kid launched a controversial album The Naked Truth.[3] The album received a lot of criticism over the cover photo where he appeared naked.[2] At the launch of his album he made a dramatic entrance when he came out of a casket. His action received a lot of mixed reactions from his fans but however he was defended by fello musician Petersen Zagaze saying that "A primitive mind is no place to get advice...." he went on saying “Everyday you watch movies with people in coffins, some even acting as Satanists, presidents, bishops, killers, sex workers, pilots, ghosts etc and you don’t complain, call [them] names or conclude, You see Ruff Kaida do a coffin stunt stage entrance you talk shallowmind talk. Why? Is it because it wasn’t Ukwa in a Nigerian movie or Nicolas Cage in the coffin?".[8]

After the successful launch of The Naked Truth, Ruff Kid said: “I feel amazed by how some people can be shallow-minded and go to the extent of saying things such as Illuminati.”[8]

Currently he is signed to Effycom Productions in the UK.[9]
