Chisamba District is a district located in the Central Province of Zambia. Its administrative capital is the town of Chisamba. The district was created in 2012 when it was separated from Chibombo District to improve local governance and development.

History

Chisamba was originally part of Chibombo District. In 2012, the government of Zambia officially declared Chisamba as a separate district. The move was aimed at bringing government services closer to the people and facilitating development in the area.

Geography

Chisamba District is situated between Lusaka and Kabwe, making it strategically located along the Great North Road (T2 Highway). It is predominantly a rural area, with extensive farmland and ranches. The terrain is generally flat, characterised by grassland and savannah.

Economy

The economy of Chisamba District is largely based on agriculture. The area is known for crop farming, livestock ranching and dairy production. Several commercial farms operate in the district, growing crops such as maize, soya beans and wheat. Cattle farming is also significant, with some of the country’s largest ranches located in Chisamba.

Tourism is a growing sector, with lodges and game farms attracting visitors seeking rural retreats and safari experiences close to Lusaka.

Infrastructure

Chisamba District is accessible via the Great North Road, one of Zambia’s major highways. The proximity to Lusaka, the capital city, provides advantages in terms of market access and investment opportunities. Basic infrastructure such as schools, clinics and local markets are being developed progressively.

Notable Events

Chisamba is sometimes mentioned in national news for hosting agricultural shows, livestock auctions, and rural development forums. It has also been a focus area for government rural electrification projects.
