Faith Zanyadza Kandaba (27 June 1975 — 24 February 2016) was a Zambian journalist and broadcaster who worked for the state broadcaster Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) for close to 20 years.

Early life and education

Kandaba was born on 27 June 1975 in Kitwe. She was the third-born child of Simon Kenneth Kandaba, who worked as a policeman before he set up a transportation business. Her mother, Rose Lunda, worked with the Young Women Christian Association (YMCA).

Before she became a journalist, she was involved in charity work with the Catholic nuns, usually providing home-based care for the sick or visiting prisoners. She then studied journalism at the Norma-Jean University College of Broadcasting and Communication in Lusaka.[1]

Career

Kandaba joined ZNBC in 2000 as a trainee newscaster and was later promoted to news reporter in 2003. She was later transferred to the ZNBC Livingstone Station in the same capacity.

In 2011 she was elevated to the position of Head of Production and Operation at the Corporation's Kitwe office and was in July 2015 appointed Head of Content Research for television, the position she held at the time of her death.

Programmes

  • The Issue Today, Tonight
  • The Silent Voices, a documentary focusing on children with cerebral palsy

Death

Kandaba died at age 40 in the early hours of 24 February 2016 at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) after an illness. About a week before her passing, she had been complaining of a headache, although that hardly kept her from work. However, when the pain got worse, she was admitted to UTH, where she died.

In a statement released by then minister of Information and Broadcasting Services and Government Spokesman, Chishimba Kambwili, Kandaba was described as an efficient newscaster and interviewer who will be missed by the Corporation, the Government and the country as a whole.[2]

She was put to rest on 28 February 2016 at Leopards Hill Memorial Park in Lusaka.[3]

Personal life

Kandaba never got married, neither did she have children, but she had a deep sense of love for children.[1]
