Dexter Chilunda (died 23 May 2014) was a field ranger and head of law enforcement at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) in Liuwa Plain National Park, Western Province.

Career

Chilunda was an experienced ranger and law enforcement officer with more than 20 years’ experience. He was on secondment to Liuwa Plain National Park from the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA).[1]

Death

Chilunda was killed by poachers on 23 May 2014 while investigating reports of gunshots in Liuwa Plain National Park. A reward of nearly $10,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter. The suspects were arrested on 1 June 2014 in the town of Lukulu, about 35km north east of the park.[2] The arrests resulted from the combined efforts of the Zambia Police, ZAWA and five Liuwa Plain law enforcement officers who followed up leads provided by supportive local communities, devastated by his death.

He was buried in Samapeni village in Nkeyema District, 250 kilometres from Liuwa, on Monday 26 May 2014. He was survived by a wife and seven children.
