Tasila Lungu Mwansa (born 10 May 1983) is a Zambian politician, human rights advocate and Member of Parliament for Chawama Constituency since 2021. She is the daughter of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu and former First Lady Esther Lungu.
Early life and education
Tasila Lungu was born on 10 May 1983. At the age of 12, she and her mother moved to the United States. She earned a Bachelor's degree from Immaculata University and a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Joseph’s University. She is also a member of the Alpha Epsilon Lambda Graduate Honor Society and Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society for Criminal Justice.[1]
She later earned a certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the University of Pennsylvania to support her work with immigrant communities in the United States.
Professional career
In 2005, Tasila worked as a community advocate (community lawyer) in the United States, focusing on the rights of the disabled. She promoted workplace policies among businesses, corporations, and government agencies that encouraged the hiring and retention of disabled individuals.
She also served as a consumer advocate, holding companies accountable for failure to meet standards or provide promised goods and services.[1]
Political career
Tasila Lungu returned to Zambia after her father’s election victory in 2015. In 2021, she successfully contested the Chawama Constituency seat under the Patriotic Front (PF). She has served on several parliamentary committees including the Committee on Legal Affairs, Human Rights and Governance, and the Committee on Transport, Works and Supply.[2]
In 2025, she announced her intention to run for re-election in 2026. Prior to that, she had also applied to stand as the PF candidate for Nkoloma Ward in Chawama, a seat previously held by Lawrence Sichalwe.[1]
Legal issues
In September 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court ordered the forfeiture of her farm in Sinda District valued at over K8 million, citing unexplained wealth.
In January 2025, the Court of Appeal granted her a conditional stay of execution on the forfeiture, pending the outcome of her appeal.[3]
She was arrested and charged with money laundering and possession of suspected proceeds of crime on 11 February 2025 by the Drug Enforcement Commission. She was released on bond pending trial.[4]
Personal life
Tasila is married to Patrick Mwansa and is known for her philanthropic work in Zambia. She has supported local development initiatives and women's empowerment programmes.
