Lewanika had good relations with the Indian High Commissioner in Kenya. It was through this channel that he managed to organise  scholarships for [[Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe]], [[Mainza Chona]], [[Nalumino Mundia]] and [[Daniel Lisulo]] to go and study in India in the 1950s. These would later be part of the [[First Cabinet of Zambia|first cabinet of Zambia]] after independence in 1964.
