Kandaba was born on 27 June 1975 in [[Kitwe]]. She was the third-born child of Simon Kenneth Kandaba, who worked as a policeman before he set up a transportation business. Her mother, Rose Lunda, worked with the Young Women Christian Association (YMCA).
Before she became a journalist, she was involved in charity work with the Catholic nuns, usually providing home-based care for the sick or visiting prisoners. Kandaba died at age 40 in the early hours of 24 February 2016 at the [[University Teaching Hospital]] after an illness.
