Widely known as a mentor to generations of media professionals, he served at Evelyn Hone College, founded the Norma Jean Journalism Institute, and impacted media reform in Zambia.

==Early life and career==
Nkandu began his career in journalism during Northern Rhodesia's transition to independence.
